In the distant future, Humankind has been wiped out, enslaved, and bred for a live deathmatch show simply known as "The Chalice". The event is weekly and watched by the Prodromus, the most powerful alien race ever encountered. There they pit Humankind against themselves, and other species that they have enslaved and bred for their own amusement.
